Extractions

Patients of all ages require extractions for a wide array of reasons. Just 4 Me Pediatric Dentistry will do everything possible to preserve your child’s problematic tooth. Extraction is a last resort. There is no reason to fear pediatric tooth extraction. This procedure is fairly simple. The dentist removes the tooth in question from the bone socket. Above all, what matters most is that the adult tooth developing beneath the gum does not become damaged. If the baby tooth has the potential to compromise the adult tooth, an extraction might be recommended. In some situations, tooth extraction is necessary as a result of dental trauma stemming from an auto accident, a fall or sports injury.

The initial step in pediatric tooth extraction is to determine the optical approach to anesthesia. Young patients in need of tooth extraction are usually provided with single tooth anesthesia, referred to as STA. This technology does not require any type of injection. Rather, the targeted tooth is numbed so your child doesn’t bite his or her lip as the extraction is performed. If the dentist determines STA is not ideal for your child, general anesthesia or nitrous oxide will be considered.

The dentist carefully moves the tooth back and forth after anesthetization to move it out of the socket. If absolutely necessary, the tooth will be removed from the mouth in sections. We kindly request that you refrain from providing your child with pain relief medication as it might prevent necessary blood clotting after the tooth is removed. All you have to do is add ice to your child’s extraction site to reduce swelling/pain and keep the gauze in position so blood clotting occurs.
